Henrique Carreiro
Academic Evangelist, Microsoft Portugal

Henrique Carreiro leads the Academic and Startup Initiatives at Microsoft Portugal. Henrique Carreiro has a Major in Electronic Engineering by IST and Post-Graduations in Computers and Telecommunications (IST) as well as Information Society Law. He was a lecturer on Math and Computers at IST and other Universities and is a frequent speaker on Information Society trends.

He had a leading role in the launch of the first commercial Internet Service in Portugal (Telepac) and the creation of Netpac, the first “consumer ready” pack for Internet access in Europe. Henrique joined Microsoft Portugal with the mission to develop the Internet and E-Commerce Area. In that role, he drove the adoption of Microsoft platforms by the leading Telcos, Media Companies and Application Service Providers, launching some of the largest Hosting and E-Commerce platforms in the country, based in MS technology and helping the development of the local startup ecosystem.

Henrique has published widely on technology subjects in the mainstream (such as Público newspaper) and technical press, and is co-author of several books on E-Commerce, Intellectual Property Law and Information Society. Most recently, he co-authored the book “Leis da Sociedade da Informação: Comércio Electrónico” (“Information Society Laws: E-Commerce”), Coimbra Editores, 2009).

Portugal has appeared in the news a lot in recent months due to its severe economic problems, but what is perhaps less well-known that Portugal has a high level of university education. In this recession we are seeing that many students are starting their own companies when they graduate, rather than trying fight for scarce employment vacancies.
