Clean-up time of London streets improved with cloud computing
12 October 2010
In this case study, you can read about LoveCleanStreets, a cloud-based application that helps London authorities manage street care with the help of crowdsourcing – supported by an innovative SME bbits.

LoveCleanStreets is an award winning free online portal that helps people who live or work in London to upload photographs of community problems like graffiti and illegal dumping, that require action by the local authority.
The company
bbits (a Microsoft Certified Partner) used
Bing Maps for Enterprise to produce an interactive map, with the latest
Microsoft Silverlight technology to show reports as they appear in real time.
As a result, graffiti complaints fell by 30%, and clean-up time has improved by 87%. Resident satisfaction with the street cleaning service has also increased dramatically.
“We are delighted that LoveCleanStreets has been rolled out across London. Encouraging citizens to get involved and report the problems they see will not only help councils provide better street care services, but it will build public support for their work. The adoption of smart solutions in this way will help keep London tidy and lead to cleaner, greener places.”
Phil Barton, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy
Users can submit reports using a free Windows Mobile or iPhone application. They can also send a text or visit the
lovecleanstreets.org. Photos of areas are displayed on high-tech maps where anyone can view them. In addition, citizens can monitor how local councils act on reports of areas that are blighted by graffiti or the illegal dumping of waste.
“Due to a lot of hard work and advances in IT, Lewisham’s new service will make a real difference to the lives of Londoners.”
Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham
