Enhancing the academic experience at Middlesex University with cloud
15 September 2011

In this case study, you can read about how the Middlesex University has enhanced its student learning experience by integrating Live@edu, a cloud-based service, into its internal communication system.
Middlesex University serves 33,000 students, with campuses in London and Dubai.
The university was using an on-premises e-mail system based on Microsoft Exchange Server that it wanted to expand to meet the growing volume of e-mail and to offer students a variety of online tools for collaboration.

“Our communication system in particular has been a great cause for concern within the university. Our emailing system was such that we could only offer the students a very small storage place, so consequently almost as soon as the students had their email space, it was full.” Professor Margaret House, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic
Middlesex chose Microsoft Live@edu for its student e-mail system and decided to continue using its Exchange Server–based system for faculty.
With Live@edu, students have a single account with which to access e-mail, an online workspace for storing and sharing documents, an online messaging service and online storage. Live@edu provides the familiar and reliable Outlook Web Access co-branded with a school’s name and logo, helping students build lifelong ties to their educational institution.
Live@edu is accessible through Web browsers for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. It is available at no cost, and it helps IT departments:
- Reduce IT infrastructure costs, such as maintenance.
- Spend less time maintaining e-mail systems and more time on strategic initiatives.
- Offer common, familiar tools for students to communicate and collaborate with peers and faculty.
- Keep data safer.
- Meet high student expectations, including anywhere access to people and information.
Now, Middlesex can ease the burden of IT management by using a single communication platform.
“As we were trying to look to a solution that might help us, we had to think about the file store, the backup, the infrastructure that we would have had to invest. And frankly, that would have been phenomenal, that would have been a massive investment.” Paula Vickers, Pro Vice- Chancellor Director Computing and Communications System Service

The new communication and collaboration solution has enhanced the student learning experience at Middlesex University.
“Using Live@edu has transformed the relationship between our staff and our students, so it’s not simply communication – it’s definitely part of their academic experience here at Middlesex.” Professor Margaret House, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic
