Bringing customers to the forefront with cloud computing

The SME receiving recognition this month is Avaelgo, a Romanian company of 10 employees that offers IT consulting services, software development, and technical training for customers worldwide. Their flexible and innovative solutions are based on rapid adoption of cutting edge cloud platform technologies, and they ensure that their customers are at the forefront of their respective fields.

Originally called H.P.C Consulting, Avaelgo has operated in its home country of Romania since 2006, and it supports clients across Europe and the United States. Avaelgo creates custom development services on top of Windows Azure. These cloud based services provide customers with auto-scalable software solutions that facilitate rapid interaction between users and data. In this way, Avaelgo’s customers maximize the value of their operational costs, which are lower than traditional capital expenditures that require extensive up-front IT investments, like hardware and software licensing.

Avaelgo has used these solutions to support Telecentre Europe, one of Europe’s largest IT-in-education NGOs. As Europeans ages 16 – 24 face significant unemployment today, the European Commission has called on action that better positions youth to assess and build their skillsets for tomorrow. Telecentre Europe has actively taken on this challenge with the online tool Skillage.

Skillage has been built by Avaelgo on the Windows Azure platform. The tool has been designed to measure ICT skills of young people from the perspective of their employability. Visitors of the website take a short test and receive a comprehensive report on their strengths and weaknesses in specific skillsets. By using Windows Azure, Skillage supports high levels of online traffic with unpredictable load patterns. The site is designed to scale easily to demand, i.e.: when many people access the site, Azure automatically creates new resources to handle data processing and Telecentre Europe pays only for what is used.

Azure’s flexibility has allowed the Skillage portal to scale up in periods of high traffic. To date, it has been used by almost 12,000 young people in 17 European countries.

There is immense potential for the output of Skillage to identify and improve the state of youth employability in Europe. Avaelgo’s cloud based solution allows Telecentre Europe to create an important tool towards this end.

As a creative small enterprise, Avaelgo exploits the public cloud platform to build a business that directly supports Europe’s economy, and for this reason it has been selected European Cloud SME of the month!

Each month, to highlight the continuing growth of cloud services provided by European SMEs, we will feature in the Microsoft Cloud & Interoperability Centre in Brussels, the technology of another innovative, growing small business
