As we mentioned several times before, cloud computing is an evolution in the technology industry that promises significant economic benefits in Europe – for both users and technology providers. SMEs are the engine of economic growth in Europe, and as users, SMEs will quickly take advantage of the cost reductions and productivity gains enabled by cloud computing.  Added to this, there are also many European technology companies and providers of cloud services, benefiting from the powerful cloud platforms and ready availability of computing power.

Microsoft works with many European SMEs as we build a European cloud market together.  In order to raise awareness on this important part of the cloud computing industry, we will be featuring a series of SMEs and their innovative solutions. A first example is  Mopapp, a startup company from Italy, that was chosen as cloud SME of the month, and has been featured in the Cloud and Interoperability Center in Brussels.

Mopapp helps developers of mobile applications (apps) keep track of their business and improve their productivity.  With the proliferation of apps for mobile phones, and the multitude of platforms that apps often run on (such as devices running Apple, Android, Windows Phone, Symbian, Blackberry, and other platforms), mobile applications developers have to collect sales and other business information from too many sources.  Mopapp helps solve this problem.  Its cloud-based service aggregates information from multiple app stores, giving app vendors a quick and easy way to track revenue, downloads, reviews, and ratings – and improve their economic performance.

Mopapp focuses on creating a service that makes other companies more efficient and profitable.  In turn, Mopapp itself is more efficient and profitable because it can use cloud computing infrastructure with the Windows Azure platform.  Rather than  making large upfront investments in computer hardware and software to run its service for its customers, Mopapp is able to use remote cloud data centres and pay only for the computing power it uses.

Founded only in 2010 and employing 3 people, Mopapp has won recognition as an award winner in two events devoted to innovative technology startup companies:  Seedcamp Berlin (April 2011) and BizSpark European Summit (June 2011).   Such events involved competitions between startups in the IT field, evaluated by venture capitalists and others looking for inventive and potentially profitable young companies.  Mopapp also participates in the Microsoft BizSpark program, which provides support for 8000 startups in Europe.

See here a video with Mopapp’s CEO and co-founder, Alessandro Rizzoli talk about the idea behind Mopapp, or visit BizSpark.com

Each month, to highlight the continuing growth of cloud services provided by European SMEs, we will feature in the Microsoft Cloud & Interoperability Centre in Brussels, the technology of another innovative, growing small business
