Doctors want to reduce their administrative work and patients want easy access to healthcare. Why not use mobile technology to help them?

Our world is changing with ever increasing computer savvy citizens, and the world of technology needs to provide more tools to help manage their daily activities.

In this context, Steria and Microsoft have teamed up and launched a brand new pilot project to develop a software application that automates communication between patients and doctors, called First-Line-Doctor-Patient Demonstrator. The application is very simple: a patient can contact a doctor, make an appointment, store his prescription and diagnosis as well as transmit this information to the pharmacist just by using his phone. In addition, the doctor can monitor the patient’s medical file and access the patient’s medical history. This application ensures interoperability as it combines multiple devices across platforms like a phone, a personal computer and Microsoft Outlook.

For high quality healthcare, it is now essential for patients to take control of their own medical data and for providers to have exactly the information they need in order to focus on prevention and personalized care.  This idea lies behind technology applications as depicted by “First-Line Doctor-Patient Demonstrator”.

The application optimises the entire process of healthcare to help ensure a secure exchange of electronic data between all actors in healthcare (doctors, pharmacists, patients, etc). The solution is based on a number of Microsoft technologies including Microsoft Surface for touch screen integration, Windows Phone 7, Bing Map for localization features, HealthVault for the secure storage of medical information and Windows Azure for outsourced hosting in the cloud.

The cloud based solution enables easy access to the necessary health data without having to worry about the devices used, location or where the information is stored. Moreover, it helps doctors reduce administrative tasks, and allows patients to have direct and efficient contact with doctors. More importantly, this online collaboration also abides by principles of online and data privacy.

With the help of cloud computing and the right technology solutions in place, the health data is not only connected, but people are connected to the data in a meaningful way. Patients can now have a more participative role and doctors can provide higher quality healthcare services.
