Smart climate change solutions through ICT and cloud computing

It’s a clear message my colleagues gave me at a recent event: the ICT industry and cloud computing are key components in helping to reduce the carbon footprint in Europe.  But of course ICT people would say that, I hear you cry!

So after watching the video below, I recommend you also listen to a few other interviews with independent environmental experts and NGOs who are doing outstanding work in this field, supported by the latest ICT technology, and who say the same thing.

Energy week - cloud computing & environment

Uploaded by MicrosoftEurope. - Explore more science and tech videos.

For instance, in our interview with Europe’s own environmental visionary Dennis Pamlin, "Environmental challenge, an industry opportunity" Pamlin reminds us of the power of technology to not only lead to solutions but generate tremendous wealth for Europe.

Also, Kate Levick of The Carbon Disclosure Project, talks about their 10-year work of monitoring and tracking the corporate carbon footprint globally which has had unparalleled success in influencing the financial decision-making of organisations to become more sustainable in their outlook. Only a robust ICT infrastructure would be able to manage this massive data collection and storage.

And finally, Jacqueline McGlade, who heads up the European Environment Agency, is raising environmental awareness across Europe through Eye On Earth. It’s a cloud-based platform that allows you to check the air and water quality anywhere in Europe. Apart from having a look at Jacqueline’s video, I strongly recommend you take a tour of Eye On Earth, get an update on the environmental conditions of your favourite spot on the planet, and let your friends and colleagues know.

Do share your examples of any ICT-based projects which are helping raise awareness and improve the environment in some way.
