First, to stimulate the production of creative and educational online content for children. Second,  to advance awareness raising and teaching of online safety in all EU schools; in order to develop children’ digital and media literacy, and promote self-responsibility online. Third, to create a safe environment for children where both parent and child are given the necessary tools for ensuring their protection online, among other things. Fourth, it puts emphasis on the take down of sexual child abuse material online. Increasing efforts to take down sexual child material online as well as making parental control tools more widely available is already a central part of the CEO coalition in which we participate. In April we have reported on additional steps we took to support law enforcement in the combat to take down CAM.

This week, Microsoft  announced its new approach to family safety in Window8, which starts when a parent creates a separate Windows 8 user account for their child. Activity reporting is the default Family Safety setting, however, for those parents who prefer to have more control, customizable restrictions can be accessed directly from links in the activity reporting email or from the familysafety.microsoft.com website. This approach is taking into account feedback that we have received by parents, children, and professionals and has been further spurred by the dialogue with stakeholders of the CEO coalition.
