Turning ideas into products
09 March 2011
During the decade I spent at Microsoft Research in
Cambridge I’ve witnessed numerous technology transfers from our basic research facility to various business units in the company (for instance
F#,
TrueSkill,
Kinect). There was certainly no unique recipe to make them happen but at high level, there are few principles we can extract.

I recently asked Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s Chief Research and Strategy Officer, how Microsoft turns our researchers’ ideas into product features or indeed new products. Craig addresses issues like the risk of the technology transfer and the ability to blend together the research done in our European laboratory with the one done in the rest of the world in order to bring forward new products.
