Video interview: Collaborating with universities to support research and innovation

The European Commission has placed innovation at the heart of the Europe 2020 strategy, encouraging large companies to play a key role through investing in research and development (R&D), as well as through public-private partnerships.
Research collaboration is woven into the fabric of Microsoft as it helps extend the capabilities of both our own researchers and our academic partners.
Over nearly two decades Microsoft has invested a significant share of its research budget to support collaborations with universities worldwide and the next generation of European researchers, scientists and innovators. For instance, in Europe we sponsor over one hundred PhD students in universities and computer science institutes. This is but a small part of our R&D investments in Europe. In fact, the European Commission’s 2010 Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard recognises Microsoft the first non-EU-based ICT company and third non-EU based company across all sectors to invest R&D in Europe.
I recently asked our Chief Research and Strategy Officer, Craig Mundie, to outline what research collaboration looks like at Microsoft and how it works in practice.
