Event | ICT-Are we doing enough to keep the Europeans ahead in education?

Education is one of the important targets in Europe’s 2020 Strategy and rightly so.

This sector more than any other will shape Europe’s future and its ability to compete globally. Information and communication technologies (ICT) can play a crucial role in improving the levels of education, through the use of modern technologies by both teachers and pupils. This is the reason why we would like to dedicate this year’s edition of the event to challenging topics, such as utilizing innovation to achieve social inclusion, but also to examining the importance of technology for future European competitiveness.

Participants will discuss the challenges and needs of incorporating ICT into student curricula, teacher training, as well as the role EU policy can play in shaping those trends, especially in implementation of one-to-one computing projects - a term that describes the ability of all students to work with a personal computer. This vision has already been successfully implemented in many countries in Latin America, but not yet in most European countries. The workshop will explore the question of whether Europe can maintain its leading position in education if we do not put greater emphasis on the students’ ability to interact with computers first hand.

In parallel to the Roundtable debate Microsoft and its partner Triangle Factory will deliver a gaming workshop, which will include hands on exercises for a group of students. We hope that the gaming workshop can demonstrate how even non-traditional tools can play an important role in achieving greater levels of education in Europe.

The event will be held in Brussels on 20th April 2010 with a start at 10.30 and will last until approximately 14.30. It will take place in the European quarter in Brussels at the Microsoft’s Executive Briefing Centre on 85 Avenue des Nerviens.
